Helinox Case Study: Building One Brand Across Two Worlds

Brand DNA Workshop, Consumer Segmentation, Global Embedding & Brand Guidelines

A Multi-Phase Partnership with ACV Consulting  |  2022 - 2023

This Helinox case study explores how ACV Consulting developed Brand DNA, consumer profiles, and brand guidelines to align a global organization across performance outdoor and lifestyle audiences.

The Challenge

Helinox had built one of the most distinctive product identities in outdoor gear. The South Korean brand's ultra-lightweight folding chairs, cots, and tables had earned a devoted global following—not only among serious backcountry adventurers who needed gear that performed at altitude, but equally among a design-conscious urban lifestyle audience drawn to the brand's collaboration culture, aesthetic precision, and social currency. Helinox occupied an unusual and genuinely valuable position: a brand that lived authentically in both the performance outdoor world and the style-forward street culture world simultaneously.

That dual identity was a strength. It was also a strategic complexity. For a brand that spans two distinct audiences—with different motivations, different channels, different competitive sets, and different emotional relationships to the product—the absence of a unified Brand DNA framework creates real operational risk. Teams in different regions and functions can interpret the brand through the lens of whichever audience they know best, and over time the brand's communications begin to feel like two different companies rather than one coherent identity that speaks to two different people.

By 2022, Helinox was operating across multiple global markets, managing an expanding product line, and growing its collaboration program with cultural and lifestyle partners. The brand's identity was strong in the minds of its most passionate advocates. But that identity had not been formally documented through brand guidelines precise enough to guide all the teams, agencies, and partners working on the brand's behalf—and the global organization needed a shared language it could build from collectively.

A brand that lives in two worlds—performance outdoor and lifestyle culture—needs a Brand DNA precise enough to hold both. Not one that flattens the tension, but one that names it clearly enough that every team can navigate it.

The Solution

The ACV engagement with Helinox unfolded across four phases over two years—moving from Brand DNA creation through consumer profiling, global embedding, and formal brand guidelines production.

Phase One: Brand DNA

Phase One launched in October 2022 with a structured Brand DNA workshop. ACV conducted a thorough preparation phase—reviewing Helinox's existing brand health research data, incorporating findings into the workshop structure, and developing a pre-work brief for the key Helinox team members who would participate. The two-day workshop itself moved through the full Brand DNA pyramid: purpose, values and behaviors, points of parity, reasons to believe, functional and emotional points of difference, brand archetype and personality, and brand promise. A review session consolidated the findings and confirmed the framework before the Brand Playbook and eventual brand guidelines production phases began.

Phase Two: Consumer Segmentation

In mid-2023, Phase Two carried the Brand DNA work into consumer profiling. ACV developed two detailed consumer segment profiles grounded in Helinox's own internal market data and third-party consumer research—capturing the distinct motivations, relationships to gear, and emotional drivers of the brand's two core audiences. The profiles were built with operational specificity: not demographic summaries, but detailed portraits of real people whose relationship to the Helinox brand and product was different in meaningful ways. Understanding both audiences clearly—and being precise about where they overlapped and where they diverged—was essential for a brand navigating the performance-lifestyle spectrum.

Phase Three: Global Brand Embedding

Phase Three was what made this engagement distinctive. In December 2023, Aaron Carpenter attended Helinox's annual global team meeting—a gathering of the brand's international leadership and marketing teams—and led a two-day Brand DNA embedding and planning workshop. The purpose was not to introduce the Brand DNA and eventual brand guidelines to the global team as a finished document, but to teach them how to use it: how the pyramid functions as a decision-making tool, how it connects to the product lifecycle management and go-to-market planning processes, and how it should influence the creative and commercial priorities for 2024.

The embedding workshop moved through a full agenda across both days. Day One walked the global team through the Brand DNA pyramid's organizational role, used the S25 product pipeline as a live example of how brand identity should influence product direction, and introduced the PLM and GTM process frameworks. The afternoon ran an S25 GTM ideation workshop—a structured brainstorm in which the global team generated, refined, and voted on the key stories and initiatives for execution in 2024. Day Two workshopped the ideas produced on Day One, threaded them explicitly through the brand pyramid to test alignment, and prioritized the big, medium, and small stories that would anchor the 2024 GTM production calendar. The session closed with captured, prioritized takeaways ready to drive the year ahead.

Creating the Brand DNA is step one. The work that actually changes how an organization operates is teaching the people inside it how to use the framework as a live planning tool—not a reference document that gets opened once and filed away.

Phase Four: Brand Guidelines

Phase Four followed immediately: in December 2023, ACV worked with the Helinox creative team to design a brand-specific template and produce a formal set of Helinox Brand Guidelines—up to 25 pages integrating the Brand DNA framework, visual identity standards, and brand direction into a single deployable document for internal teams and external partners.

The Results

The multi-phase engagement produced a complete brand identity foundation, brand guidelines, and—critically—an organization that had been through the process of learning how to use them.

Key outputs delivered:

  • A completed Brand DNA pyramid developed across a structured two-day workshop with key Helinox global leadership—covering purpose, values and behaviors, points of parity, reasons to believe, functional and emotional points of difference, brand archetype and personality, and brand promise.

  • Two detailed consumer segment profiles grounded in Helinox internal market data and third-party research—capturing the distinct motivations, product relationships, and emotional drivers of both the performance outdoor audience and the design-forward lifestyle audience.

  • A two-day global Brand DNA embedding and planning workshop at Helinox's annual global meeting—including the Brand DNA education session, PLM and GTM process introduction, S25 GTM ideation workshop, and a prioritized 2024 production calendar with key stories threaded through the brand pyramid.

  • A full Helinox Brand Guidelines document—up to 25 pages designed in partnership with the Helinox creative team, integrating Brand DNA findings, visual identity standards, and brand direction into a single production-ready reference.

  • An organizational alignment outcome—by completing the embedding work at the annual global meeting, the Helinox international team left with both the documentation and the shared experience of working through it together.

Key Insight

The Brand DNA workshop is valuable. Brand guidelines are valuable. But there is a gap between producing those tools and the organization actually using them - and that gap is where most brand work quietly fails. A beautifully crafted brand pyramid that lives on a shared drive is a document. The same pyramid, worked through collaboratively by a global team as a live planning tool, becomes organizational behavior.

What made the Helinox engagement distinctive was the deliberate decision to close that gap. By joining the annual global meeting and facilitating the embedding work in person - walking the team through how the pyramid connects to product decisions and go-to-market planning, then immediately applying it to the real planning challenges of 2024 - ACV turned the Brand DNA from a deliverable into a capability. The global team left the meeting knowing not just what the Helinox brand stood for, but how to use that understanding to make better decisions.

For a global brand operating across multiple markets and two distinct consumer audiences, that organizational capability is worth far more than any brand guidelines alone. The brand's strength in both the performance outdoor space and the lifestyle culture space is only sustainable if the teams in every market are navigating that dual identity from the same foundation - and making decisions that reinforce it rather than inadvertently pulling it in different directions.

Building the Brand DNA and brand guidelines is the starting line. Embedding them into an organization's planning process is how they become a competitive advantage that compounds over time.
