5.11 Tactical Case Study: Building Brand Clarity for Growth
Brand Archetype Workshop & Identity Clarity
Leadership Alignment Engagement with ACV Consulting | June 2024
Published: September 30th, 2026.
This 5.11 Tactical case study explores how ACV Consulting used a Brand Archetype Workshop to help the leadership team clarify the brand's identity, align around its positioning, and build a stronger foundation for growth.
The Challenge
5.11 Tactical had spent two decades earning the loyalty of law enforcement, military, and first responders. Its tagline, "Always Be Ready," was not a slogan. It was a genuine operating principle shared by the people who wore the gear.
By mid-2024, new CEO Troy Brown had joined with deep DTC experience and a clear mandate: expand into functional fitness, outdoor adventure, and everyday lifestyle while preserving the brand's core credibility. That kind of expansion is one of the hardest moves a brand can make well. Without a clearly documented identity, expansion becomes dilution.
The products could enter new categories. The question was whether the brand's identity was defined clearly enough to make the expansion coherent.

The Solution: Brand Archetype Workshop
ACV facilitated a full-day Brand Archetype Workshop with 5.11's leadership team—a structured eight-hour working session that began with pre-work review of the brand's existing materials and competitive context. The session moved through brand archetype alignment, competitive analysis, and a collaborative positioning territory exercise, concluding with a voting exercise that aligned the group around the most promising directions.
The session was designed as a co-creation process rather than a presentation—leaving the leadership team aligned on who the brand is, not just agreeing to a document someone else wrote.
The Results & Deliverables
The engagement delivered:
- A pre-work brand review establishing a grounded external POV on 5.11's identity and competitive position.
- A full-day Brand Archetype Workshop supporting cross-functional leadership alignment.
- A brand-building framework covering target audience, core positioning, and go-to-market principles.
- A Brand Archetype recap deck ready to inform brand guidelines and creative direction.
- A leadership follow-up session ensuring organizational readiness to act on the aligned archetype.
Key Insight
5.11 had more than two decades of earned credibility—a competitive asset most brands spend a career trying to build. The workshop's job was not to invent a new brand story. It was to distill what was already true into language clear enough for the whole organization to build from.
You can only stretch a brand as far as its center is strong. That work starts before the next campaign brief is written.
