Digital Assessment: Amazon Channel, Owned Digital & Growth Strategy

This Children's Art Brand case study explores how ACV Consulting developed an ecommerce growth strategy to help a natural children's art brand expand beyond Amazon and build stronger owned customer relationships.

The Challenge

A Commonwealth country natural children's art brand - beeswax crayons handcrafted from natural, food-grade ingredients, positioned around safety, sustainability, and child development - had built a meaningful early foothold in the North American market primarily through Amazon. The products were genuinely differentiated: natural beeswax rather than paraffin, non-toxic, designed for small hands, and positioned as an eco-conscious alternative to conventional art supplies. The brand had earned strong product ratings and healthy organic keyword positions in its niche categories.

The challenge was structural. A brand that sells primarily through a third-party marketplace has limited ownership of the customer relationship. Amazon does not provide sellers with unrestricted access to customer email addresses for independent marketing, which limits a brand's ability to move marketplace customers into its own email, retention, and lifecycle marketing programs. At the time of the assessment, the brand's owned website was undergoing a rebrand, which meant the assessment needed to serve a dual purpose: evaluate the current Amazon channel and existing digital assets, and map the digital foundation the brand would need to build as it transitioned toward owning more of its customer journey.

The brand that owns the customer relationship will win. Amazon builds sales. A strong owned digital program builds a brand.

The Solution: Building an Ecommerce Growth Strategy

ACV delivered a comprehensive digital assessment that established the foundation for a broader ecommerce growth strategy, spanning Amazon channel performance, website review, competitor insights, platform analysis, paid social acquisition, email retention, market search trends, and market potential—with particular depth on the Amazon channel given its role as the brand's primary sales driver, and with forward-looking recommendations designed to inform the brand's owned digital buildout.

Amazon Channel Performance

The Amazon review assessed advertising campaign performance, A+ content, brand store presentation, and the competitive keyword landscape. The campaigns were healthy, with strong ROAS, and the brand's A+ content and product copy adhered to best practices. Opportunities identified included adding video content, increasing bid aggressiveness given the campaign's performance, and individualizing A+ content across product lines to drive greater differentiation.

Competitive Positioning and Market Demand

The competitive benchmarking gave the brand a clear picture of how it sat against the large US toy and art supply brands that dominated the category - and where it had genuine organic keyword advantages in its niche around natural, beeswax, and bath-focused art products. Market search trend analysis identified Q2 as the peak demand window for bath-related art products and August as the back-to-school peak for crayons - giving the team a seasonality framework for paid investment and content priorities.

Email Retention and Owned Customer Relationships

The email retention review was a highlight. Reviewing the brand's email program as a first-time customer, the experience was genuinely strong - the right automation triggers in place, a well-structured welcome series, and a brand voice that held throughout. The opportunities identified were tactical: mobile legibility improvements, better visual isolation of the discount code, and a follow-up sequence for subscribers who had not redeemed their welcome offer.

Paid Social and Creative Testing

The paid social section validated the existing Advantage+ campaign structure and recommended adding a creative-testing campaign to systematically identify the formats and hooks that best convert the brand's target audience of parents with young children.

Assessment Findings & Growth Roadmap

Key outputs delivered:

  • An Amazon channel assessment covering campaign performance, A+ content, brand store presentation, and competitive keyword positioning - with specific optimization recommendations for each.

  • Competitive benchmarking of organic search performance, domain authority, organic traffic value, and keyword rankings against large US toy and art supply category leaders.

  • A platform comparison assessing the brand's tech stack, email capture mechanics, payment options, and loyalty infrastructure against primary competitors.

  • Paid social assessment validating the existing Meta campaign structure and recommending a creative testing framework to identify top-performing formats and hooks.

  • An email retention review with specific improvements to mobile legibility, discount code presentation, and welcome sequence follow-up.

  • Market search trend analysis identifying Q2 (bath products) and August (back-to-school) as peak investment windows, with a seasonality framework for content and paid spend.

  • Market potential data for both the global sustainable toy market and the wax crayon market, supporting the strategic case for owned digital investment alongside Amazon.

  • A three-year ecommerce growth strategy mapping the path from Amazon-primary to an omnichannel digital presence with owned customer relationships.

Key Insight

Amazon is a powerful channel for a Commonwealth brand entering North America. It removes the friction of building DTC traffic from scratch, provides instant access to a massive shopping audience, and validates product-market fit in the target geography. For an early-stage brand, it is often exactly the right first move. The resulting ecommerce growth strategy was designed to preserve Amazon's acquisition strength while building the owned channels needed for long-term customer relationships.

But it comes with a structural constraint that becomes more limiting over time: the brand that sells on Amazon does not know who bought its product. It cannot follow up. It cannot build a relationship. It cannot present the next product to the customer who loved the first one. Amazon can remain a powerful acquisition and sales channel while owned digital infrastructure gives brands another path to build direct customer relationships over time.

The email program is a bridge toward a more direct and lasting brand relationship. This brand had already built something genuinely strong there - the assessment's job was to show them what building on top of it could look like.
